Arogya Adalat is another novel venture started by Dr. Vaidya. Arogya Adalat (Health Court) conducted at Pune, on the 2nd Sunday of every month, chaired by Dr. Vaidya, has provided a platform for the people to raise various public health, social and political issues and get organizational support to strengthen their voice. Arogya Sena has issue-based committees, with 4 members in each committee, for the redressal of the grievances. This activity has become popular in a very short time and given a new dimension to the image of Arogya Sena. Many issues presented in this Adalat were later taken up by Arogya Sena became Mass Agitations.

After Haffkine Institute stopped the production of ARV poor people were forced to purchase ARV at an unaffordable prices. AROGYA SENA took up the issue and forced Government health institutions to make it available free of cost. AROGYA SENA also suggested intradermal administration for which 1/10th dose is sufficient, which a scientifically proven mode of administration.

After the incidence of a medical student landing up with Acute Renal Failure due to Rhabdomyolysis caused by physical torture during ragging, Sept.06, Arogya Sena has established this squad, to begin with at Pune, which will rush to the rescue of the ragging victims and handover the criminals to the law.

Pollution caused by a lead factory, Tandon Metals

The villagers filed a petition in Jan 2006 with Arogya Adalat. After this Arogya Sena took a series of protest meetings publicly, meetings with Government authorities, held a massive protest march on the Collector’s office. The factory owner installed four antipollution systems which have reduced pollution levels substantially. Later on, the factory was closed down by the owner.

A prominent surgeon, owner of a renowned hospital handed over IV bottles with fungus hanging inside. Arogya Sena persuaded the matter with FDA which has yet to find out the cause for it and thus no action is taken against the culprits.

Safety of water bodies at tourist spots and swimming pools

Survey of 15 pools

Every year few hundred lives are lost by drowning at tourist spots and swimming pools. Arogya Sena conducted a survey of 15 swimming pools from the Pune-Pimpri Chinchawad area and found no international safety norms were followed at nearly all the pools. After this Arogya Sena appealed to respective municipal corporations to supervise the safety norms and even suggested a safety protocol to State Govt. for tourist spots. Government is still apathetic about these mishaps.

Potholes on Pune roads

Arogya Sena organized a human chain and close the door of PMC for 15 minutes, symbolically, to warn PMC (Sept 06) against the miserable condition of Pune roads. After this mayor of Pune ordered the PMC officials to repair the roads in four days or else threatened to resign. PMC repaired the majority of roads, though temporarily. Arogya Sena has asked PMC to repair the roads permanently.

Privatization of Government Hospitals

Arogya Sena held a special Adalat to protest against the policy of PMC to hand over PMC hospitals that serve the poor, to a private organization. This ultimately leads to a huge agitation along with many like-minded organizations.

Arogya Sena held a special Adalat to mass educate people on Dengue and Chikungunya after a recent outbreak of these deadly epidemics and criticized PMC and Government for their inability to maintain proper public cleanliness.

Dirt in soft drinks

The sealed bottle of Chota Thumps-up with obvious dirt hanging inside was handed over to us. Arogya persuaded the matter with the FDA which reported it to be rubber-like matter and raided the bottling plant of Thumps-up. A foul-smelling tetra pack of Fruity was also handed over to Arogya Sena. FDA confirmed it as some putrefying material but failed to take action against the manufacturers.

Use of National Langauge on Wrappers of Food products and Medicines

Use of National Langauge on Wrappers of Food products and Medicines was demanded by Arogya Sena two years back. In November 2006, Hon. Ramvilas Paswan, cabinet minister for Chemicals ordered the use of national language for medicine wrappers.

Reduction of VAT on life-saving equipment especially Ventilators

AROGYA SENA is demanding since the last budget that VAT on life-saving equipment be reduced to 4% from 12.5%.

Garbage Depot run by PMC at Uruli Devachi – Phursungi.

Public Health Issues Raised

Villagers from Phursungi presented this issue to Arogya Adalat in June 2006. PMC runs this garbage depot on 110 acres of land without following any safety norms laid by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. MPCB has sent a notice to PMC for using the wrong location in the wrong way. Arogya Sena organized a massive protest march on PMC. The government has taken note of the issue.

Meager Provision for health in central Budget

Arogya Sena is been consistently demanding that provision for health should be raised from 0.9% of GDP to at least 2% initially and later up to 5%. Then and then only the poorest of the poor will gate basic health care.
